Chapter Five
Soon after dawn Petula climbed out of bed and dressed.
She had not been able to sleep despite the fact that they had come home early.
Her uncle had been angry with her. Just as she joined Lord Crowhurst, he had come from the house with a black look on his face which told her that he was incensed.
âWhere have you been, Petula?â he asked sharply. âThere was someone I wished you to meet and I could not find you.â
âIt was so hot, Uncle Roderick,â Petula began, only to be interrupted by Lord Crowhurst who said,
âI am afraid your niece felt faint, Buckden, and it is not surprising seeing that as usual there are far too many people crushed into far too small a space.â
Her uncle did not answer, he merely took her by the arm and led her back towards the house.
As they neared the entrance, he said to her in a low voice,
âSurely you have enough sense to know that you should never go into the garden alone with a man?â
Petula did not reply.
It had been difficult enough ever since arriving at the ball and meeting the Duke to think about or concentrate on anything but him. Now she had talked to him it was doubly difficult.
Her uncle had introduced her to several people who were talking with Mrs. Warren and it was only later she realised that she had not heard their names nor could she even remember what they looked like,
She thought that she had talked to several other people, but she was not sure.
All she could think of was that the Duke loved her as she loved him.
âHe loves me,â she whispered beneath her breath.
She felt herself thrill even though she recognised that he now belonged to the girl with the sun-tanned face.
At last after what seemed to be an interminable length of time she was back in her own bed and the room was in darkness.
Only then did she think that now she had found again the man who by his kisses had awoken such an ecstasy and glory within her, it would be even more agonising to lose him for the second time.
He loved her!
Over and over again she found herself remembering the deep note in his voice when he had said,
âI fell in love with you and God knows, although I have tried, I cannot get you out of my mind and out of my heart.â
âHe loves me! Could anything, Petula asked herself, be more incredible, at the same time more utterly and â completely wonderful?â
She lay awake with her heart throbbing tumultuously in her breasts and she felt as if once again his lips were on hers in the quietness and beauty of the little wood when he had opened the Gates of Heaven to her.
As she dressed, she knew that nothing and nobody would stop her from going to him as he had asked her to do. Equally she was sure that she could leave the house unobserved.
